Warders at midnight thought to surprise the Parkhurst prisoner, but he was wide awake, and sheltered behind a chimney. He sent out a fusillade of slates, but the warders were unhurt and overpowered the convict, whom they roped up and lowered to the ground. He had been foodless for thirty-eight hours.
