"BUY BRITISH GOODS”

Preference Campaigns At Home And Abroad THE RIGHT SORT OP RECIPROCITY. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Thursday, 7 p.m.) LONDON. July 8. The Council of the Self-supporting Empire League, formed in London, includes Lords Jellicoe’ Willingdon, Birdwood, Dame Melba, Mr. Grondona (wjio was promoter). Admira* Mark Kerr, General Seeley, ox-Gov-ernor Weigall, and Mr. Strack (representing the Australian Primary Producers’ Bank). Lord Jellicoe emphasised New Zealand’s patriotism in the purchase ot Empire goods. He announced that his wife was conducting a campaign to induce housewives to give preference to New Zealand products. Mr. Strack said it was equally important for Australians and New Zealanders to make up products that would appeal to British tastes, as it was for British manufacturers to supply goods to suit Australian and New Zealand requirements. At an advertising convention at Harrowgate, in drawing attention to the proposed slogan “Buy British Goods,” a novel view was expressed by Mr. Dodd, of th e Weekly Newspaper Proprietors’ Association. He said he did not agree that Britain’s salvation depended on the development of overseas markets. Britain, was actually the world’s greatest undeveloped market for British goods. Any advertising campaign in the Dominions would need the greatest discretion. There was a strong inducement to look to the United States when seeking to sell big lots of produce. Mr. Ellison (New Zealand Produce Association) submitted a suggestion to the Imperial Economic Council that a proportion of the million subvention spent in connection with the export of British pedigree stock should be used to keep up laboratory investigation into the problems of refrigeration and the establishment of a trade information bureau for the benefit of Dominion producers.
