POPPY DAY
WILL IT EVENTUATE?
AN INDEPENDENT MOVE. There is a possibility that Poppy Day will not eventuate in Palmerston North this year. At a special meeting of the executive of the Palmerston North Returned Soldiers’ Association on Monday night, Mr 13. J. Jacobs, presiding, it was decided thaj; the Association should not sell poppies undedthe conditions set forth by the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association, which provided for the appropriation by the parent body of twenty per cent, of the takings for its funds. If the short time left (three weeks), is sufficient for the purpose in view, the Palmerston North R.S.A. intends acting independently and will manufacture its own poppies It is the intention of the Association to do as in previous years, and devote, the takings of Poppy Day to relief of 1 unemployment and distress among returned soldiers, with the exception of ten per cent which is to be devoted to the fund to aid the children of the devastated areas of France.
Although the time left for the manufacture of poppies is short, the Association is optimistic.
