For "Tess of the Storm Country" "Miss Pickford assembled a cast of exceptional ability. Lloyd Hughes, who plays the leading male role, which the late Harold Lockwood created in the original version, gives an excellent performance, while Gloria Hope, \n the role of Teola Graves, wins much sympathy. Jean Hersholt, as a fisher man with villainous purposes, gives plenty of dramatic thrills. Others in the cast are Forrest Robinson, David Torrence. Gus Savilie, Danny Hoy, Robert Russell and Mine, de Bodamere. John S. Robertson was the director, and Charles Rosher the photographer.

FAMOUS PLAY FROM FAMOUS BOOK. "jrjn WINTER COMES." The Palmerston North season of the forthcoming: J. C. Williamson Company "If Winter Comes," and "Tho Cat and the Canary," will comemnce at the Opera House on Friday evening. As th novel from which the play "If Winter Comes," has drawn its title is one of the most widely-read fictional works of a decade, the success of the stage interpretation should be assured. The productoin of tho play is in the hands of a specially selected London company, headed by Mr Garry Marsh, who will be seen in the curiously complex character of Mark Sabre. Others of undoubted distinction in the cast are Misses. Ailsa Grahame and Jane Saville, English artists specially engaged for the production by Sir George Tallis. The adaptation of this famous book . for the stage has been done by Mr McDonald Hastings, who, according, to Australian critics, has managed very faithfully to create the dramatic atmosphere of the novel, and has completed the task while the book continues to be widely read and discussed. It is a play of tense situations, poignant sentiment, and emotional inspira.tion, and has proved the vivid outstanding success of the year in both Melbourne' and Sydney. Australian critics commend "If Winter Comes" as an especially realistic, strong and interesting play. Throughout the piece never loses that realistic touch which rises to really great heights in the inquest scene. It is said to be a drama all humanity—a story of passionate sincerity, which deals with life as it is—shorn of its venocr>—and with characters of vividly human appeal.

"THE CAT AND THE CANARY." "The Cat and the Canary" by John Wiliard, a comedy drama", is the Company's second production on Saturday evening. This play had an. exceptionally good reception; in Sydney and Melbourne. The "Herald" says: "The Cat and the Canary" is a fine show—an exciting play with a laugh in it, and like other plays of its kind not to be judged from any standpoint but that of thrills—secret passages sliding panels, hidden jewels, an escaped lunatic What more would ydu expect, as there is a pinch . 6f comeds that makes the thing go with a snap?" J. C. Williamson's Company appearing in these two plays include Garry Marsh, Ailsa Grahame, Jane 'Saville. Isobel Wilford, J. G. Atholwood. George Blunt, Sydney Stirling,

H. H. Wallace, Arthur Cornell. Lilyan Nightingale, and Lorna Helms. Both productions will be presented on the same, scale of completeness as in Australia'. The box plans for both productions are at (Dates' Music Stores.
