ROADING AND HOUSING.

MORE MONEY REQUIRED.

£15,000 APPLIED FOR.

For road improvements and housing requirements, the Borough Council, through the agency of the Deputy Mayor (Cr. F. Jackson), and the Town Clerk (Mr J. R. Hardie) has made application to the State Advances Department for sums aggregating £15,000. Reference to this matter was made by Cr. Jackson at the Council meeting last eevning. He said that when he was in Wellington recently with tho Town Clerk they had both gone to the State Advances Office in the matter of raising loans for housing and roading purposes, and were informed that, though there was really no legal limit to the amount a local body was entitled to receive under the Act, the Board had stipulated that £5,000 was the maximum for the year.

"We have already spent our £5000," continued Cr. Jackson, "thoughit 1» just coming forward now, and wo sre not entitled to recelvo any moro for roading until the end of this year. With regard to a loan for, housing re- \ quirements, we have put in an application for £SOOO and will be able to secure this amount in April next. Wo asked if there was a possibility of securing money for housing and converting it later to roading purpose*, but this is not allowed." Cr. Jackson further stated that he had been given to understand that there was no more money available by local bodies from this Department under 6 per cent. However, application had been made on behalf of the Council for £IO,OOO for roadin* and £6,000 for storm water sewer•a.ge, and the matter was to be considered by the Board this week. Whatever success was met with no money would be loaned under 6 per cenr. He suggested that the matter be left in the hands of the Town Clerk and himself, and that if the reply was unsatisfactory, a.uthority be granted them to make enquiries elsewhere.; A resoluton to this effect, moved by Cr. Oram, was carried.
