COLLEGE STREET EXTENSION.
ENGINEER'S PROPOSALS TO COUNCIL. The Borough engineer (Mr J. R. Hughes) submitted proposals to the Works Committee of the Council last night relative to the formation of College Street extension. The plan submitted showed the relative, positions of the above street between Scandia and Alexandra Streets and Tenguhu lagoon, which had to bo crossed. The total length was twenty chains. There were no difficulties so far as the port'on between Alexandra Street, and the top of the Terrace above the lagoon was concerned, and the engineer had kept the cost of construction distinct from the remaining portion. The whole of the lowtying ground was subject to flooding, and it woxild be necesasry to keep the new street level at least two feet above the present ground level. The lagoon would have to be crossed by a woden bridge. For the present, he considered it only necessary to 'orm (he portion between the lagoon and Scandia Street, twenty-one feet wide and a nine feet footway without kerb and channelling. His estimate for the work was:— First portion from Alexandra Street to top of Terrace £465: second portion from lagoon to Scandia Street, £GB2, total. £1,147. As an alternative proposal, in view of the above cost of constructing the second portion whiHi provided only a ricrht-of-way and had no property of any value fronting on to it, he recommended tha< Mi H. Whitehead be approached and nsked that, providing the Council undertook to construct the footway along the top of the Terrace, wou'd he agree to give the straight land required, say 15 feet in width. The engineer was instructed to interview Mr Whitehead and report to the Council.
