DEATH OF A GIRL.

HEARING OF MURDER CHARGES COMMENCED. [Per Press Association.] BLENHEIM, East Night. Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., commenced late this afternoon the hearing of the charges against Richard Hollis and Thomas Viggars, arising out of the recent death of the girl, Rita Violet Ellen Nicoll. The charges against accused were that they did, at Blenheim, on May 7, murder Miss Nicoll, also that they did unlawfully use an instrument with intent to commit a crime. After lengthy evidence had been called, both accused were committed for trial. Counsel for Hollis did not apply for bail. In the case of Viggars, bail was granted in two sureties of £SOO each and self £2OO and on condition that he reported twice daily to the police. Counsel for accused applied for an order prohibiting certain portions of the evidence that had been objected to, but the Magistrate said he had no power to grant the application.
