SEMI-OFFICIAL TESTS.
(To the Editor.) Si r ;_ln reading through your columns of the 4th inst., on the discussion of " Herd Testing " the conference of dairymen, I was very much amazed to find that Mr. N. Campbell, in advocating his scheme, said his system would be a good check on the semi-official svstem of testing now in vogue. I take it that Mr. Campbell is inferring that the system now in vogue is not too reliable. As Mr. Campbell knows, this system is supervised by the Department of Agriculture, which is headed by Mr. W. M. Singleton. May I point out that I am. one in this district who has had considerable experience in this work, and have established certificates of rec*ord;s of 8411 b., 6221 b. and 6101 b. of butter fat from mature cows, and 5311 b., 7271 b. and 71 Sib. of fat from heifers. I also have two more two-year-old heifers that have produced 6181 b. of fat in SSSdays, and 4811 b. of fat in 235 days respectively; also an 11-year-old cow, with 7011 b. of fat in 28 2 days. The three last-named are running on test this season. The latter is doing her record after being down with milk fever, paralysis and other complications. I feel, therefore, I would be joins' the Department and breeders, who have taken up this work, an injustice by letting the statements pass unchallenged.—l am, etc., H. R. GREEN, Kairanga.
