BUSINESS AT FIRST MEETING. CORRESPONDENCE AND GENERAL. The hrst meeting of the Palmerston North Borough Council as at present constituted, was held last night, His Worship the Mayor (Mr F. J. Nathan) presided. There were also present, Councillors F. .Jackson, H. J. Canton, M. H. Oram, W. L. Fitzherbcrt, A. J. Graham, E. V. West, J. Hodgens, and J. ( A. McLeavey. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Secretary, Willard H|me, returning thanks for donation of £lO. —Received. From Mr Unka Hira, making application for renewal of street barrow license. —Granted, From Mr L. Mence, forwarding ac-. count for the sum of £lO, for photographs of Esplanade, 'Square, etc. — Referred to Finance Committee. From Mr E. D. Berry, making application for the supply of a one inch water service to. section situated in Ferguson Street, in lieu of the standard Jin. supply.—Referred to the engineer. From Mr C. Robertson, intimating that he was pleased to note that it had been decided to construct a footpath in Roy Street' between Florence Avenue and Rongopai Street, and expressing the wish that the tarring and sanding of Rongopai Street, would be carried out before the winter set in.— Referred to the engineer.

From Vs*> Kairauga County Council enclosing rate-s demand for the sum of £l6 6/10, in respect of rates on abattoir, covering a period of three years to March 31, 1923.—Referred to the Finance Committee.

From the Postmaster, Palmerston North .asking that repairs be effected to telephone box at tire station.- —Referred .to engineer.

From. Mr W. Highstead (borough employee), stating that he had been laid up for eight weeks and asking if anything' had been done regarding his pay for that period.—Referred to finance committee, with power to act. From the Wood and Coal Dealers' Association, advising that 'a minute had been placed on the Association's books, appreciating the promptitude of the Council in granting the concession on the wholesale price of coke. —Received.

From Messrs Jiekell and Gilmour, forwarding duplicate documents for signature authorising the formation of a right-of-way in Taonui Street. —Crs. Jackson and West were authorised to sign. From the district engineer, New Zealand Railways, stating that by giving up a portion of the Railway Reserve for gasworks purposes, the remaining portion .which was leased to Mr Farland, had been severed from access to the main road, and asking if the lessee would be allowed the use of the roadway formed in connection with the works.—lt was reported that this had already been attended to.
