WHEN MR CANNOT COULD NOT APPEAR.
SCENERY DESCENDS ON HEAD. During the first act of the matinee of "Forty Thieves" at the Grand Opera House/ Wellington, on Saturday afternoon,, an accident happened which might very well have had serious conseciuenc.es. Mr Jack Cannot was standing in the wings, when, without any warning, one of the borders (which hang on a level with "the flies," and form the roof" of the scene) fell from the above, and the corner of a batten struck him just above the left temple, with such force as to gash the scalp and render him temporarily unconscious. A doctor, who was quickly upon the scene, attended to Mr Cannot's wound, which had to be stitched up. Mr Cannot was severely shaken by the blow, but' recovered sufficiently lo go on (in mufti) in the second act, and sing his popular song-, "Are You Working?" In the meantime the pantomime was kept going, as though nothing had happened, by Miss Mona Magnet, as Ganem, who rippled away at Mr Cannot's lines and "gagfj" as though she was quite accustomed to do without her pantomime father, Ali Baba. In tthe second act, Mr Higginbottam, with the assistance of a good loud prompter, appeared in a couple of scenes as Ali. Mr Cannot was able to appear as usual in the evening.
