NEW LAND OF COTTON.
SOON AUSTRALIA'S CHIEF INDUSTRY. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] SYDNEY, July 1. A prominent visiting Queensland cotton-grower states that 7000 acres "were harvested in the past season, yielding nearly 43 million pounds weight of seed cotton, compared with about one million pounds harvested in the previous year. This year it is anticipated that 40,000 acres will be planted. Cotton pickers are paid ljd to 2d a pound, and earn 12/6 to 15/ daily. He exressed the conviction that cotton-growing will become the chief industry of Queensland, if not all Australia.
