ENTERTAINMENTS.

PALACE. 500 BEAUTY GIRLS IN “A SMALL TOWN IDOL.” Mack Sennett’s entertaining qualities are assuming, with great credit to the producer, a finer and higher degree of excellence with each new release, at the Palace Theatre “A Small Town Idol” proves the most effective comedy that has yet come from the expert hands of the master builder of comic plots. “A Small Town Idol” achieves more legitimate honours than any Sennett comedy since “Mickey.” At times the plot interest and story values of the production rise to points of poignant interest. There is much riotous hilarity in “A Small Town Idol,” there is a veritable fivmy of beautiful girls—five hundred of them assembled in a single episode, and there are ingenious “stunts” thrilling escapades and wildly developed chasea The production is an Associated Producers’ release, and is the first eight reel comedy the screen has given us. Tl\e special jazz music effects by Miss Hancock’s fine orchestra add not a little to the general effect. For supports a Review—very good, and the latest Gazette and Pictograph complete an excellent night’s light entertainment. INDEPENDENT PICTURES. WILL ROGERS IN “JUBILO.” When a picture bears the hall mark of Will Rogers so indelibly stamped upon it, that picture is sure of success from its first screening till the audience watch the last few inches of film flutter off the screen. That is why “Jubilo," at present being shown by the Independent Pictures, at the Opera House, attracted such a large number of people to this popular picture show last evening and on Thursday evening. As a hobo with a heart of gold, a ragamuffin with the courage of a lion, and an idler with the activity of a cat when roused, Will Rogers is at his best, and brings out the full human interest which such a picture arouses. The picture will be shown at a matinee this afternoon, and for the last time to-night. HUBERT CARTER COMPANY. Attention is drawn to the grand concert to be presented by Mr Hubert Carter and some of his pupils at the Opera House on Tuesday next. The box plan opened at Bennett’s yesterday, and in view of the great demand fox* seats it is advisable for Intending patrons to reserve at once. The pupils selected %ave only had the advantage of Mr Carter’s instruction for a few months, but their progress has been so rapid, that an artistic triumph is predicted for them. Mr Carter has been recognised wherever he has sung as an artist of great distinction and Palmerston has already heard some of his art, so that the reappearance of this very popular tenor is eagerly anticipated. ,
