Social at Linton.
FAREWELL TO PTE. YOUNG.
A farewell social was tendered Pte. Fred Young, of the 18tb. Eeinforcements, at Linton last night. A big crowd of residents gathered in the Linton Hall for the occasion, and a party of Palmerston people journeyed out with Captain J. Linklater to assist with the musical programme. Mr T. Moody, on behalf of the people of Linton, said that it was with mixed feelings' that the friends of Pte. Young saw him going out to join his comrades in the fight for the freedom and liberty of the Empire. He was cheerfully going forward to join the great chain of strength which was keeping the enemy from our shores. If it had not been for men. like Pte. Young we would have had the enemy in New Zealand. Pte. Young was quite capable of fighting for himself, but he was -going to the front to fight for every man, woman, and child in Linton. The social had '
been held to say " good-bye" to a man who had heard the call from his comrades overseas, and who was going forth to conquer a vile and wicked enemy.
Captain J. Linklater, in presenting Pte. Young with, a wristlet watch on behalf of the people of Linton, said at the present time we were losing a good number of men on the Somme, and Pte. Young was going to help £ll up the gaps. He hoped that their guest w r ould always remember the spirit of the Anzacs and always remember that he was a New Zeal&nder, and that he should fight honourably and, if necessary, die for his country. He wished him the best of luck and a safe and early reWrn. The wristlet watch would perhaps serve to remind him of the. people of Linton, whose best wishes would go with him. Pte. Young, in reply, said that he mueh appreciated the expressions of goodwill from Mr Moody. and Mr Linklater. He knew that wheneverhe looked at the watch which had been presented to him he would look back to the gathering in the Linton Hall and remember the many pleasant days he had spent in their midst. Musical items were contributed by Misses Voss and O. Bett, and Messrß Bet and Linklater. Miss Bett played the accompaniments. The floor was in beautiful order for dancing, which was supervised by Mr A. Curran as M.C. Dance music was supplied by Misses F. and M. Cotterill, Miss O. Bett, and Messrs M. Cullie and P. Waghorne.
