ABOUT POHANGINA

(By "DALRIADA. ")

The very many friends of MrsCulling will heartily sympathise* with hor on learning the curly and unexpected demisp of her sister. The* lfitp Miss Annie M. Calling who was well-known both in Palun-rston and ! the surrounding district, was a well qualified exponent of Sandowism, and not very long ago was conducting a gymnastic scnool for ladies in Palmerston. A severe attack of pueunvmia and pleurisy was the primary cause of the sad event. The deceased lady who was on# 27 year& of age, was as populateand wellknown in and around tne north of Otago as locally. Her death took place at her mother's residence at Hillgrove, near Oamaru, last Saturday, after »an illness of only two weeks' duratiou. Another cause for sorrow was the sad fatality at Ashhurst whereby Ileury Kruse met his death. He wasfor many years resident in this district, and was much liked anil respected by all with whom he came in contact. It may be small comfort to his widow to know that many and many a heart was turned towards her in sincerest sympathy as the deplorable news travelled round. It is reported here to-night that Mr M. Spelman had been successful in his action at law for damages against Mr Searle for causing the fire which spread on to his property. The old adage which declares that "fire is a good servant but a bad master' r may have a trenchant meaning for agood many people yet, as a sequel to the late severe fire epidemic. Last week Mr John Enwright and Miss Foote, of Piri-piri were joined in the holy bonds amidst the hearty good wishes of a large number of th» friends of both. Metaphorically we throw the' sanctum slipper after them. On Monday last the Pohangina Defence Rifle Club met to compete for trohpiea, as announced formerly. They had a most successfnl and enjoyable day, and a goodly number of competitors rolled up. It was a. sealed handicap event, and the winner turned up in Mr S. Cowen, who secured the dock presented by Mr W. D. Bauckham. Mr I. R. Thomas and Mr Alex. Mac Donald tied for second place, bnt in the t shoot-off Mr Mac Donald was successful, and annexed the trophy given by Mr W. Devine. Both the placed men had long starts, certainly, though Mr Cowen's shooting was first-class, irrespective of his handicap points, but it was noticeable that the "cracks" wereall at sea at tho short ranges. And another point worthy of earnest consideration by the other members of the club is this: the placed men have been the most consistent attendersat practice. Verb, sap! After the competition, practice at 500 yds, etc., was the order of the day, and some excellent shooting was done. The/ club is convinced of its ability to keep its end up at Ashlmrst on Wednesday, the 6th prox., when it will meet a team of the Manawata Mounted Rifles, w r ho will have to shoot straight if they want to win the match. " In these days of "Higher Criticisms" and "New Theologies" it is refreshing to find that there are still many minds unsophisticated enough to sta'nd for "the faith onoe for all delivered to the saints," and as eaob successive holiday season come* round Christians rally in large numbers to stimulate and encourageeach other in the path of service. In this connection we refer to the tenth annual Conference of Christiansmeeting at the Gospel Hall, Pohangina. This took place on Easter Monday in beautiful weather, and was well attended by visitors from Palmerston North and surrounding district. Altogether three different meetings were held during the day for worship and ministry of the Lord. A hearty invitation wasextended to all who cared to spend the day in this way, refreshments? being freely provided in the interval& between meetings.
