CONTROL OF PRICES
australian plan. three-yeaiTretentio^. (N.Z. Press Association.—Copyright.) (12.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, Aug. 22. The State Premiers have agreed to take action to attempt to have the State price control powers transferred to the Commonwealth tor three years after the war. A conference will be held of Commonwealth and State legal advisers to draft a measure to be submitted to the State Parliaments. The Prime Minister (Mr Cln'fley) asked the Premiers' conference for the powers for three or five years and said that unless they were given disastrous inflation would follow the abandonment of price control. Mr Chifley said that public and private expenditure would be double the pre-war figure. This would increase the demand for basic materials. In addition, the demand for durable consumer goods was likely to exceeu local .supplies or possible imports. The Minister of Post-War Reconstruction (Mr Dedman) said that not only prices but a'lso the allocation of goods should be controlled. Otherwise, he said, a Mack market would immediately develop making control of price* extraordinarily difficult.
