GENERAL EISENHOWER
FABEWELL MESSAGE
(Rec. 11.25 aim.) RUGBY Jan. 2. “Till we meet again in the heart of the enemy’s Continental stronghold,” was the conclusion of General Eisenhower’s farewell message to all men and women serving with the Allied Forces in the Mediterranean theatre, says a correspondent at Allied headquarters. General Eisenhower said that he took leave of them with a feeling of personal regret equalled only by his pride in their brilliant accomplishments in the year just past. Recalling the situation when he opened the North African campaign 15 months ago, he said: “Malta was being defended only by the bravery of her almost entirely isolated garrison. Allied ships could not cross the Mediterranean and the Eighth Army stood only a short distance west of Cairo. Now all this has been changed by the skill, determination, and devotion to duty of the men and women with the Allied forces. You havo established yourselves on the mainland of Europe and are still advancing, and together you comprise a mighty fighting machine l send God speed and good luck to each of you, along with my personal assurance, lasting gratitude, and admiration.” —Official Wireless.
