'The promotions of General Sir Aln n Brooke, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, to Field-Marshal and of Air Chief-Marshal Sir Charles Portal, Chief of the Air Staff % to Marshal of tho Royal Air Force are announced in the New Year’s Honours List. There aro five new baronies, five new Privy Councillors, ono baronetcy, and three Companions of Honour. The barons are: C. G. Ammon, M.P., chairman of tho London County Council in 1941 and 1942, and twice Parliamentary 'Secretary to the Admiralty; Colonel John Gretton, M.P. for 38 years; Sir Thomas Roydcn. chairman of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway; Colonel Sir Courtauld Thomson, a wellknown philanthropist and hospital governor; and Mr William Wost.wood, chief industrial adviser to the Admiralty. Tho five new Privy Councillors aro Mr Ralph Asshcton, Financial Secretary lo the Treasury; Sir Archibald Clark Kerr, British Ambassador in Moscow; Mr W. Mabine, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food; Mr W. Paling, Parliamentary Secretary to tho Ministry of Pensions; and Captain C. Waterhouse, Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade. , The new baronet ia Sir Sydney Richard Wells, who has been M.P. for Bedford since 1922. Tho Companions of Honour aro Mr Richard Casev, the,new Governor of Bengal. Rev. E. 11. Fellowes, historian of English music, and Mr R. S. Hudson, Minister of Agriculture. The list includes 44 new knights.
Malta, having come through the siege with flying colours, received recognition in the Now Year’s Honours List. The awards include one C.M.G., three 0.8.E.’5, five M.B.E.’s, and six British Empire Medals.
