The death of Air Wilson Steer, the great “natural” painter, aged 81, is announced from Sydney. As a landscape artist Air Steer has been described as ranking with the first three English artists of his generation. Air A. V. Pizzey, who lias for many years been prominently associated with the Y.M.C.A. in Palmerston North, has accepted the position of generalsecretary in tliis city as a war-time appointment, he taking the place of Air B. Harvey, who is in a military camp. Air Pizzey intends to carry on the organisation here as usual, with more stress, however, on the physical training classes lor younger people, the majority of those over eighteen having entered camp. Sergeant James Irvine, R.N.Z.A.F., lias been awarded the British Empire Afcdal, says a London report. When his machine crashed and burst into flames he was catapulted through the roof, but though suffering from the effects of his experience, rushed back to the burning machine and saved the pilot’s life by dragging him clear. Aged 20, Sergeant Irvine, who was formerly a. grocer, conies from Alt. Albert. Auckland.
