YARRA’S GALLANT END
CANBERRA, Mar. 24. The Australian sloop Yarra, which was lost recently after the Battle of the Java Sea, went down with her guns blazing defiance at an overwhelmingly superior Japanese naval force. Her last heroic fight in defence of a merchant convoy in the dangerous waters around Java was describe,:l today by the Prime Minister (.Mr Curtin), who said the stories of thirteen survivors of the Yarra who have been landed at a British port showed that the sloop put up a gallant fight. She was attacked by three Japanese heavy cruisers and four destroyers JO miles south of Tjilatjap on March 3. At that time she was convoying two merchant ships and a motor minesweeper. Mr Curtin said all the Brit'sh ships gallantly resisted and continued fighting until overwhelmed by the enemy's great superiority in speed, numbers, and gunfire.
