OBITUARY.

MR JOHN OKE. Tlicrc passed away at bis residence in Awahuri, recently, a well-known and respected resident. Mr John Oke, in his 84th year. Born on the border of Devon and Cornwall, England, Mr Oke came to New Zealand on the Edwin Fox, 60 years ago, and had lived for most of this period in the Manawatu. His marriage to a daughter of Mr G. Davison, of Palmerston North, took place 52 years ago. and they celebrated their golden wedding in 1939. Mr Oke was an enthusiastic gardener, being in the employ of the late Mrs AV. Johnston, "Highden," for 25 years. Ho leaves his widow, three sons, Messrs Stanley (Longburn), Leo (Te Kuri, Taranaki) and Leonard (Awaluiri), also three daughters, Mesdames W. Newlove (New Plymouth), \Y. Reid (Napier) and W. Manson (Kopane) ; another daughter, Mrs W. F. Bracken predeceased him a year ago. There are also 42 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren. The funeral took place to the Kelvin Grove Cemetery and was attended by many settlers of the district. Rev. J. W. Martin, Presbyterian minister, conducted the services*. . The pall-bear-ers were Messrs Stanley, Leo and Leonard Oke, W. Manson, W. Bracken and J. Davison. The florai tribute* included one from the Awahuri Women's Institute.
