ADDRESS ON FO&D. The Manawatu Women’s Club held its monthly meeting, yesterday afternoon, Airs A. E. Mansford presiding. The hostesses were Alesdames A. E. Hansel, J. L. Davies, and A. E. Lynch. Aliss Beryl Bartlett played violin solos (accompanied by Aliss Cora Bartlett) 1 and Airs W. AlcCrea sang songs (acl companied by Airs 11. Airs Davies introduced' Air Rees, who spoke on “Juices and Their Eses.” producing a chart to show the ]6 elements necessary to.- the welfare of the body. Sickness could l>e avoided if these J G element.-, were incorporated regularly in the diet. Air Rees discussed the mineral and vitamin content of vegetables, describing e-urrots, which contained 14 of the 1G elements, as “the miracle of the age,” and pointed out that their value was fully realised by the Air Force authorities. The characteristics of other vegetables and fruit were described. Celery and cucumbers were rich in vitamins. In the case of certain complaints, in pre-| paring a diet fruits and vegetables] predominating in the elements required would be .ecoinmonded. Fori instance, to dissolve and keep in suspension uric acid in the blood fruits and vegetables rich in sodium would be used. Horse radish and lemon were invaluable in curing catarrh. Everyone should use lettuce summer and winter, the speaker averred, because it was one | oi the few greens containing copper, i Alincrals taken through fruit were more easily assimilated than through medicines. Air Bees said that many people, .by the usual methods of cooking, threw the best part of vegetables away and ate the residue. Unions should he used ten times more than they were and raw if possible. Oranges were rich in vitamin C and spinach was a wonderful vegetable which, to get the real result, should be used in salads. The speaker outlined the wilting system of cooking greens in about one tablespoon of water with very little salt, also the shredding of root vegetables, winch should be cooked about lour minutes. The tops of red beet should not be thrown away ; they were more complete in mineral elements and should be cooked as cabbage. The same applied to turnip tops. AVomen particularly needed potassium in abundance, which was found in carrots, celery, parsley, anil spinach. Air Rees concluded by de-j scribing the diets recommended for j various illnesses and cases which had i ■ been cured through diet. Airs Hansel thanked the speaker and ! entertainers. Aliss Al. Cranston conveyed congratulations on behalf of-the j executive and members to the Mayor (through Airs Alansford) on his re-| election and wished them both a happy] term of office. Airs Alansford said her) part was very small, but the Mayor would do his best for the city, the war effort, and the Forces in the future as lie had done in the past.
