PAPATAWA.
At, tho monthly meeting of the Papa-t-awa Women’s Institute, Mr L. E. Gleadow presided. A now member, Mrs J. Baldick, was welcomed. In connection with the institute’s recent birthday celebration, Mrs Gleadow expressed thanks to the artists and all who had contributed. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Ilalpin. Mrs Pine and Miss Goldsworthy. It was decided to send a posy and a” letter of sympathy to Mrs Smalley, who is at present an inmate cf the Danncvirke Hospital. The two delegates to the half-yearly conference at Takapau were instructed to support the movement aiming at dividing the Southern Hawke’s Bay Federation into Southern and Central Hawke’s Bay, with the division at Takapan. Arrangements for the spring carnival, to be held in conjunction with the Papatawa garden circle w.cro made. The month's competition was for “the. best bloom in my garden,” in senior and junior sections,- and the winners were: Senior, Mrs A. Hall (iris) 1, Mrs R, Walker (pansv) 2, Miss J. Gilbert (tulip) 3: junior, Miss "Martin (tulip) 1, Miss Goldsworthy (stock) 2. A euchre tournament conducted by the Patriotic Society 'was held on Saturday evening. This was the final in a series of six tournaments, and points prizes donated by Mr B. Bailey were won by Mr W. Pirie (men) and Miss A. Hancock and Mrs R. Bradley (a tie). The night’s play resulted in a win for Mrs F. R. McLean, in the ladies’ section, the consolation prize going to Mrs L. Knight. In tho men’s section tho winner was Mr B. Bailey, and the consolation went to Mr A. Dickens. Special prizes were awarded to Mrs B. Bailey and Miss J. Sago for attending to the supper arrangements. The final rounds of two competitions were won by Mrs D. McGregor and Mr E. Cattanach. Proceeds from the sale of. a sack of brooolli donated by Mr .T. Murray swelled receipts. The points prizes for another scries have already been donated by Mr T. Busst.
Under the direction of the Vicforia Domain Board, Mr J. Murray (chairman), Mrs S. A. Davies, Messrs R. Bradloy, F. Herrick and A. Hall (secretary), improvements have been framed out to the Papatawa Hail. These include the painting of the buildintr. the erection of a concrete tank an 3 the provision of shelves. Another improvement contemplated for the near future is a concrete path from the gate to the hall. The money for this path was donated by the Jubilee Committee.
