MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Mr H. P. Lawry, S-M v presided aL .a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Eric Fleming McDonnell, labourer, aged 23, of the Waiouru camp, pleaded guilty through Mr G. A. McGregor to wilfully damaging three glass shelves, valued at 9s, on October 4, and guilty also to wilfully damaging a padlock, valued at 12s, the property of the Government, on October 5. Senior-Sergeant Mclntyre said defendant went into a shop with a friend and attempted to leave with a pair of evening shoes without paying for them. The glass shelves were broken then. When in the police lock-up defendant broke a padlock in a corridor in an attempt to escape. Defendant had a considerable list of previous convictions. In view of defendant’s undertaking to take out a prohibition order, the Magistrate fined him £1 on each charge, with 10s costs. Defendant was also ordered to make good the damage. The City Council pleaded guilty, through Mr EL. 11. Cooper, to an information laid bv the Inspector of Scaffolding (Mr Carr) of using a swinging stage without a permit. Mr Carr said the stage had been used for painting a gas-holder when it liad_ not been approved. Mr Cooper explained that the stage had been used in painting the lower part of tlie gas-holder. Tho Magistrate commented that the trouble could have been righted had a request been made to the council. A conviction was entered 3 t'he council to pay 10s costs only. E. E. M. Fuller was fined £l. with 10s costs, for riding an unlightsd cycle at night, .
