PAHIATUA.

At the Borough Council Chambers on Friday, in addition to the usual sewing afternoon the wrapping of 40 Christmas parcels to be posted to the men overseas was undertaken. Each parcel contained a newspaper, a pair of socks, a khaki handkerchief, a tin of barley sugar, and a short note of Christmas greetings. There are to bo 100 parcels sent and the remainder will be posted as soon as the socks come in. A social held at Mangatainoka under the auspices of tho combined Presbyterian and Church of England Guilds from Ruawhata proved very successful. The proceeds were in aid of the Ruawhnta Sunday school. Miss Swanney contributed solos, Mrs and Miss Cox Jed a community sing. The accompanist was Mrs Rusden. Competitions resulted: Plain sponge, Mrs J. A. Ross 1, Miss Fergus 2; brown butter sponge, Mrs S. Clarke 1, Miss Fergus 2; decorated vase, Mrs W. Davenport 1; posy, Miss Forgus 1; buttonhole, Mrs Smith 1; shoulder spray, Mrs Smith 1; presentation box, Miss Fergus 1; children's class, decorated saucer, Diana Davenport 1; buttonhole, Barbara Brown 1; posy, Diana Davenport 1. The annual tournament of the Pahiatua Golf Club was played on Saturday and Sunday. The championship was won by J. Richardson, who beat K. Eglinton 4 up and 3to play in the final. Mr J. G. Swainson, president of tho club, welcomed the visitors and Mrs S. K. Siddells (Mayoress) presented the trophies. The end of the current golfing season is in sight and so present interest centres on tho annual championship competitions which are now well advanced. Only the finals remain to be played in two men’s events. J. C. Richardson and J. G. Swainson are to try conclusions in the senior event, and A. J. Morgan and R. Taylor in the intermediate. M. Buckingham beat W. Comber in tho junior championship. , At the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute it was decided that a gift be brought along to the next meeting for the Makogai leper fund. A demonstration on clay modelling was £iven by Miss M. Welsh, who came to the meeting from Masterton, bringing with her several models of tho finished articles. Mrs H. Gardner gave a Golden Thread talk on Lawrence of Arabia, Competitions resulted: Sausage rolls, Mrs Hall Watson 1, Mrs Donald 2; bloom, Mrs Watson 1, Mrs A. Bissct 2; wall competition, Mrs Macrae 1, Mrs Gray 2; two dress spravs made by Mrs W. Harrison, Mrs Etz 1, Mrs P. Bisset 2.
