ANGLERS’ CLUB

The Palmerston North Anglers’ Club, in its report for the year ended September 30, 6tatcs that the opening of the past season, was most encouraging. It raised hopes for a prosperous season, which proved so up to Christmas, when most of the good bags were secured, including fish up to 91b in weight. Most of the big fish were taken or. natural bait and matuka in the lower reaches of the Manawatu River. The smaller streams that were not affected so much by the flood water fished fairly ,we)l. After Christmas, the weather conditions did not prove suitable to the fly fisherman, who look to this part of the season as the best fishing. Tho lakes district in the vicinity of Bulls and Turakina are well stocked with rainbow, and many good fish have been taken in the past season. These lakes should prove a standby when the rivers cannot be fished. The Palmerston North branch of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society had reared and liberated over 6000 yearlings. Approximately 4500 of these fish have been tagged with a small bead. The club impresses upon anglers to be good onough to see that the returns of their catches are recorded on the forms that have been provided when they procure their licenses. Of the six competitions that were held, four weigh-ins resulted. The total number of fish weighed in was 39, the total weight being 481 b. The Berger Cup was won by Mr H. Lane with a fish of 61b. 13oz. No Stockwell Cup competitions were fished owing to most of the other clubs going into recess. It is regrettable to note the falling off of financial members. It is. hoped that the coming season will be more profitable in this respect.
