PRESIDENT ASTONISHED.

M. HAYE’S REMARKS.

(Rec. 9 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Oct. 2. President Roosevelt told tlie Press that the Government had not been advised officially concerning the Vichy plans to strength Martinique. When informed of the statement of the French Ambassador (M. Henry Haye) on the similarity of the two governments’ viewpoints, Mr Roosevelt was utterly astonished. He said he did not believe the ambassador made the statement. M. Haye was reported to have declared: “The plan to resume the work of the defences of Fort de France is old and was prepared before the war. I am sure there is nothing important separating the United States and French viewpoints.”
