ASHHURST.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASH HURST, Aug. 10. A social and dance was held in the Town Hall in honour of • Privates L. Orange, A. Pick, F. Mclvor, and F. Marshall, members of the third Echelon. Items were rendered by Mesdames 11. Middleton, J. E. Hewitt; Mr Alfred Jones, Mr R. Algar, and Mr A. Balmer. The chairman of the Patriotic Committee (Mr M. Murphy) presented the guests of the evening with gifts from the residents, and wished them the best of luck and a safe return. Supper was served and dancing continued. Mr A. Stephens was M.C. On Friday evening, in the Town Hall, the school concert took place. Many parents and visitors attended and an excellent programme was enjoyed. The stage was patriotically draped with flags. The M.C. was Mr F. Dunstall, chairman of the School Committee: —The items were given by tho following: Junior Choir, Standards 2 and 3 girls, Infants and Standard 1, Senior Girls, Infants and Standard 1, Lorna Doreen, Junior Choir, Infants, Shirley Duthie, Percusson Band, Douglas Turner, Cecil Tunniclifle, Girls’ Choir, Infant Room Party, Robert Seale, Standards 2 and 3 boys. Senior Choir, Kelvin Rodgers, Standard 2 and 3 pupils, Daphne Morris, Colin Blows, Jean Currie, Boys’, Choir, June Marshall and party. Mr Dunstall expressed thanks to the teachers and all who had so ably assisted with the entertainment. Tho children’s costumes lent reality to the items and parents were thanked for their co-operation in preparing them. The Women’s Institute drama circle is practising a new playotto to bo presented at the birthday afternoon. The friends of Mrs E. Shaw, wno is an inmate of tho Palmerston North Hospital, will be pleased to loam that she is progressing favourably. Mrs W. Brockie of the Gorge, is recovering from her illness.
