AMERICAN DIPLOMAT.

WASHINGTON REBUKE. UNAUTHORISED INTERVIEW. Received August 10, 10.50 a.m. WASHINGTON, Aug. 9. The Assistant Secretary of State (Mr Sumner Welles) announced that Mr J. O- H. Cudahy (American Ambassador to Belgium) had been recalled ior a consultation. “Mr Cudahy’s interview was given without the authorisation of the State Department.” said Mr Welles. “The interview violated standing instructions from the State Department. Certain views which Mr Cudahy expressed cannot be construed as representing the Government’s views.” Some quarters express the opinion of the possibility that further disciplinary action might lie taken.

In an interview published by the London evening papers on August 6 Air Cudahy described the deplorable conditions which have resulted from the Nazi aggression against Belgium and the invasion of her territory by the German armies. He expressed the opinion that these conditions were typical of those obtaining in the other areas of Western Europe which had been overtaken by a similar fate.
