MINESWEEPER COMFORTS.

LOCAL LADIES’ ACTIVITIES. The members of the Minesweepers’ Comforts Circle met at the Y.W.C.A., yesterday afternoon, Mrs R. Evans presiding. The secretary (Mrs C. Freyberg) sent an apology for absence and her place was taken by Mrs E. Stevens. The president reported that three cases of goods containing 134 tins of sweets, 50- books and magazines, 30 cakes, '29 tins of biscuits and shortbread/and 150 knitted' articles (balaclavas, pullovers, socks, etc.), coffee, milk, beans and tinned fruit had been packed- and sent away in the past month. There were still a number ot woollen articles in hand, but some of the balaclavas were too large in the face and some of the scarves were under the required length. Scarves were not accepted unless they measured 72in by 9iin. Some of those received had been returned to the makers to bo altered, arid Mrs Williams. Mrs Pegden and Mrs Evans had altered others sent in anonymously. Mrs Evans suggested that members, of the executive should help with necessary alterations when on duty at the rooms. Miss E. Warren pointed, out that the correct patterns and measurements could be obtained frofn the rooms. Mrs Evans remarked that sufficient sweets had been sent in for the last packing so that it had not been necessary to buy any. Mrs A. A. Langley reported that she had visited the headquarters in Wellington and appreciation had been expressed there of the work being done in Palmerston North. She liad seen the head packer, who had said the goods wore.. excellently I packed and had given advice on small points which could lie improved. Socks, pullovers, and sea stockings were urgently needed, 100 pairs of sea stockings, 100 pullovers a.nd unlimited socks (from the whole of New Zealand) being required each month. Balaclavas were not urgently needed. • Mrs .Evans added that there was plenty of wool in hand, hut knitters were required. ■ The roster of members to l>e on duty at the rooms was arranged, the next receiving days being August 28 and 29. Gifts had been received from the Manawatu Countv Club. Knitex girls, Mirinni Ladies’ Guild, Sunshine Club. Cloverlea Knitting Guild. Carnarvon Women’s Institute, Opiki Knitting Club (per Mrs C- Akers'). Mrs Hudson’s knitting club, Mrs Billens’s knitting club, and the junior Red Cross. Mr W., E. Winks reported that Mrs Freyberg bad written to sav that she had made inquiries in Auckland about coverings for gloves and bad received an offer of suitable material from a firm there. Notification bad been received from the Defence Purchase Division for Patriotic Purchases that wool would be available for the next six months.
