HOROWHENUA COUNTY.

COUNCIL BUSINESS. A meeting of the Horowlienua Bounty Council was held at Levin yesterciay, Cr G. A. Monk presiding. The other members present were Crs L. H. Best, J. D. Aitchison, F. J. Ryder, A. M. Atkins, D. K. Guy, A. M. Colo uhoun and C. P. Jensen. Ail apology for absence was received from Cr A. J. Gimblett. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild was in the process of formation. The duties of the guild would be to provide comforts for refugees and those who were suffering hardships as the result of the war.—Cr Monk said that a meeting was being held at Government House early next week and Mrs Monk was agreeable to attend. ( The Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. L. Laurenson) advised that he had made arrangements for the chief traffic inspector to visit the council and discuss traffic control.—Received. The Alinister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E. Parry) wrote seeking’ information in . regard to the council’s emergency precautions ' scheme.—The chairman said that the council’s thanks' should be extended to the' engineer in connection with this matter, as he had spent a considerable time in' making tlie report on the scheme. He said that a report of the scheme -would be forwarded to the Alinister. The Wallace County Council wrote stating that it‘had passed a resolution favouring a 48-hour week, and a 50 per cent, reduction in the amount of hours. —The chairman said the matter was a national one and not for the county councils.

The Transport Department wrote in regard to heavy traffic fees for farmers’ lorries. The communication stated that farmers’ trucks up to five tons were now subjected to the rebate of 50 per cent, of heavy traffic fees.— Received. A communication was received from the Public Works Department which stated that a 50 per, cent, reduction in main highway expenditure would be necessary this year, and that-finance would be provided only for- the maintenance and replacements of bridges where this was necessary.—The chairman said that no highways would be sealed this year except the Waitarere highway; which had reached a stage that the completion of the sealing Was imperative and the department had agreed to this work being done. „ Mr A; N. Kelly wrote stating that water could not get- away, on account of an uncompleted drain, at the foot of Albert Road, Tokomaru. He asked that the drain be opened.—Referred to the engineer. Mr John Barnett (Shannon) made application for metal ,for the entrance of his residence in Engel’s Road.— Referred to the engineer. The County Council’s Industrial Union of Employers forwarded a copy of the local bodies (rural section) labourers’ award.—The chairman commented that the award provided for an increase of Id in the wages of general labourers.

A request that the council erect a culvert at the extra gateway which the Levin Dairy Company was placing on its property in Queen Street was referred to the engineer. *.;/.• Replying to the council’s- application for a subsidy for the cleaning of the Aratangata drain at Ivoputaroa, the Public Works department advised that the matter had been noted in this year's estimates, but it would depend on the moneys available under the Lands Improvement Vote and its order of urgency as to whether a subsidy would be granted.—Received. Cr Guy was appointed delegate to the Horowhenua Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club and a donation of £2 2s was approved for the club’s funds.
