TOKORANGI
(From Our Own Correspondent.) TOKORANGI, June 13. At the monthly meeting of tho ' Tokorangi Women’s Institute, Mrs Prior presided over a smaller attendance than usual. Apologies for absence wore received from Mesdames Barnett, Iwikau, and Bush. Visitors were welcomed from Rata and Putiki. A letter was received from Miss Wenham (one of the prime movers in the founding of the institute), who is now resident, at Maungatadtari. Mrs Prior demonstrated tho knitting of. socks for soldiers, later distributing among members a grant of wool received from headauarters. The competitions resulted: —Bloom, Mrs Prior (dahlia) 1, Miss Iwikau (daphne) 2, Mrs Arapere (chrysanthemum) 3; handkerchief satchels, Mrs Prior 1, Mrs Arapere, senr., 2, Mrs Arapere, junr., 3. In the latter competition some very fine work was displayed, tho judge (Mrs J. Marumaru) complimenting the members on tho high standard achieved. Mr M. F. Ilenry gave an interesting and instruc-
five address on cane weaving, deinonstrating the making of baskets and trays with three-ply bases. Mr Ilenry explained weaving with single cane, pairing, waling and slewing, and concluded by showing several borders suitable for finishing off. Ho wa= thanked by Mrs Arapere. Mrs Tonga Takarangi, president of the Putiki branch, addressed the meeting, advancing various proposals by which members could assist the patriotic appeals, especially in connection with the supplying of comforts to . members of the Maori Battalion. Mrs J. Marumaru aios addressed the meeting in this connection. At the close of the speeches Mrs Prior thanked tho ladies for their interest and advice, and said the various points raised would bn submitted to the members for their consideration. Mrs Prior assured tho speakers that Tokorangi was, at present, doing a great deal for the soldiers, but the proposals they had hoard would he considered and the lino of action to be adopted would be conveyed to the speakers as soon as possible.- Four new members were elect'll. Musical items were given by Misses McCarthy and Prior. I
