FAT CATTLE.

JUDGING ON HOOKS. HIGH PRAISE FOR EXHIBITS. High praise was given by the judges of the entries in the fat cuttle competition at the Winter Show, when judging of the carcases on the hooks was carried out at the Longhorn freezing works yesterday. The opinion was expressed that the exhibit was the best ever seen in the Manawatu district. and this condition was assisted by the competition being held in the winter this vear, and not in the spring as previously. Tlic judges of the carcases were Messrs j. Drysdnle and C. 11. Williamson, who made their awards as follow: Pen of Two Bullocks, weight not to exceed 7201 b; J. and C- R. Collis ... 1 C. T. In the second section his winning entry was placed second on the hoof, and K. Duncan’s entry was third on the hoof. T. R. Saunders’s third prize entry was not placed on the hoof. In the single, steer section D. Collis won first prize with the entry with which he was also successful on the hoof, and T. R Saunders’s second prize entry was similarly placed on the hoot. .1. A. Mitchell and J. Puklowski’s entries were not placed on the hoof. A number of competitors and others interested were present at the freezing works to see the entries, and the judges explained their decisions to them in the chilling chamber.

JUDGES’ REMARKS. On iK'lialf of the judges, Mr Drysdale said the exhibits were the best lie bad ever seen in ilie Manawatu district. On tiie whole the quality exceeded anything be luid ever judged. The judges bad a difficult task. Some of the exhibits were a good deal better than others, bu* on the whole the classes were a very fine effort. He congratulated llie prize-winners and expressed the hope that those I .who had not gained places would not be disappointed. All the exhibitors deserved credit for their efforts to keep the competition going, lie said Mr Drysdale then made the following detailed comments on the prizewinning entries; TWO BULLOCKS. NOT EXCEEDING 720L8. First prize, J. and C. D. Collis. —

These arc just about as good pieces as I liavo ever seen. They have a wealth of meat on the buttocks and right up to the hamstrings. They are beautifully finished alt ’die way down and have the_correct amount of fat inside. They are well filled up in the flanks and very uniform. Second prize, C. T. Keehle. —These are very good pieces, well finished outside. TWO BULLOCKS, WEIGHT NOT TO EXCEED 2-lOLB. First prize, C. T. Keehle. —These are well filled up in the buttocks, and beautifully covered. They have the correct amount of fat inside. They are a little deficient on top. v Second, prize, K. Duncan. —These are well fined at the top and in front and have the correct amount of fat inside. They are ideal for the trade. Third prize, T. R. Saunders. — These arc a little bit coarse, and are perhaps .carrying rather too much fat inside. SINGLE STEER. First prize, D. Collis. —This 'is a well-linislied beast, evenly covered with fat. it is a. little hollow in the back, but this in not a bad fault. It lias a beautiful brisket and no waste. It is an ideal body for chilling requirements. Second prize. T. R. Saunders. —This is nearly equally as good as the winner, being an ideal beast for the trade, blit is not so well filled in the buttocks. There is a more prominent hollow in the back. It is well covered and lias the correct amount of fat inside. Third prize, J. A. Mitchell. —This carcase is probably a little bit wasteful Yu id is fat in the rib. It is well filled oil the flank. Very highly commended, J. Puklowski. —This’ is beautifully covered outside, but falls away in front. It is quite a good beast for the trade.

SUCCESS OF COMPETITION. After these remarks bad been made, tlie president of the Manawatu A. and P. Association (Mr C. E. Vile), on behalf of the association, exhibitors and spectators, thanked the judges for their decisions and the manner in which they bad given advice. This class had been bold at the Winter Show, lie'said, at the suggestion of Mr Drysdale. The Spring Show was not an ideal one for the competition. This was the first of the winter chilled beef competitions, and thanks were due to*Mr Drysdale for his help. The demonstration had been well worth while coming to attend. He also thanked Mr K. W. Deighton, the judge of the animals on the hoot, lor his work. Judging in small pens, such as those at the Showgrounds, was a difficult matter, and the way in which Mr Deighton had carried out his work would reflect credit on any judge. He extended to the manager men fc of the freezing works sincere thanks for the manner in which the killing and handling of the carcases had been, carried out, and. the fine manner in ■which the carcases had been placed before the judges that day also reflected great credit on the butchers. He also thanked exhibitors for their support. Mr K. F. Kirk, chief steward of the competition, said lie felt that the society had made a correct decision in

holding the competition at the Winter Show. He had been associated with the class on four occasions, on the three previous occasions at the Spring Show, lie could say that, previously, the entries were negligible, but on tiiis occasion were not only prolific,] but obtaining them had beo.n a plea-; sure. The results were obvious in themselves. He could also give an assurance that serious consideration would be given to the provision of better facilities for exhibiting cattle at the Showgrounds Ho congratulated the judges of the cattle, both-on the hoof and on the hook, for the manner in which the exhibits had been placed, and also those who had given prize money for the classes. With their spirit the success of the competition was assured he said.
