LONGER WORKING HOURS.
POHANGINA COUNCIL’S SUPPORT
Support for the proposal of the AA'allaee County Council lor a 48-hour week, with no increases of wages, oO per cent, reduction in holidays, and overtime at ordinary rates of pay, because of war conditions, was expressed by the J ohangina County Council at its meeting yesterday. The Wallace Council sent a letter asking for support in tins proposal, which arose out ot the proposed award for drivers for local bodies. Cr T. E. Craine said that a better war effort could be made. AVe were just going on in the same old way. The chairman (Cr S. «T. St rah an) said that he did not know how production was going to be increased without extra work. •• . Cr AV. Howell said that he could not see how we were going to win a war on a 40-hour week when \ye were fighting a nation working unlimited hours. Farmers had not received any lead in the matter of increasing production, contended Cr Craine Now was the time when they should be told "hat they were expected to. do, instead ot in September or October; The council should support the proposal, he said Farm workers gave more than 48 hours a week, and it was time that the rest of the community came into line with them. Alembers earned a motion supportiiio- the proposal, with a proviso that it be for the duration of the war only,
