LAND DRAINAGE.

AIAKERUA BOARD

Trustee H. Seifert presided at a meeting of the Makerua Drainage Board yesteruay. The other members present were Trustees J. A. Ait-chi-son, W. Jackson, C. T. AV. Clifford, G. Larsen, H. Sanies and 11. Alexander.

The chairman presented a report on the application for subsidised labour trom the Social Security Department for certain improvement works. The application had been granted, and it was decided that the board proceed with the work immediately. The clerk reported on the amount of unpaid rates and lie was instructed to sue for some of those outstanding. Air C. Hall advised that he was agreeable to the board taking over control of a portion of his property which is to be planted with trees and also used for protective work. Air N. Gibbons waited on the board in reference to the proposed construction of a boundary drain from Akeis drain to the o.d main dram. No action was taken. The overseer (Air R. A 7. Tucker) reported that the drain cleaning operations were almost completed. A flood in the Aianawatu River oil Alay 11 reached 18ft on the intersecting channel gauge, and caused the complete silting of floodgates on. Seifert’s, Akers’s and Ross’s drams. These outlets 1 were cleared as soon as possible, and are now functioning well. Little damage was done to tlio river bank, except at Rage's Point, where the work above the point will need to be extended down stream. Erosion was fa'st at present, and abom four chains of work would have to be done as soon as possible. The projection work on the Tokomaru River below the railway bridge had improved the course ot river, and a close waicli was being kept in ease of further ttouble. The financial report presented by the clerk (Air N. I. Nielsen) stated tliat the board had a credit balance at the bank at to-day’s meeting ot £IB9B 14s lid as against a credit balance of £1485 5s Id at the corresponding meeting in 1939. The rate statement showed that there was £o4J los lOd outstanding for 1939-40, and that £l9O 13s 3d had been paid since March 31.
