RURAL HOUSING
MORE INFORMATION SOUGHT,. POHANGINA COUNCIL’S * VIEW, The Pohangina County Council decided, at its meeting yesterday, to obtain further information about the Government’s, rural housing scheme, several expressing the opinion that the scheme had not been as well supported by local bodies as it should have been. Cr. AV. McKay said\that he thought that the scheme was a challenge to farmers, and that was one reason why more interest 'should have been taken in it. He believed that the council would have practically no liability under the scheme. There, was an urgent need for houses for country workers. The clerk (Mr A. E. Orgias) said that he had received several inquiries about the scheme. Cr. T. E. Craine said that the scheme had certainly not been taken up by local bodies as it should have been.
Many farmers would ■ consider taking sliuremilkers instead of boys if they could- get a cottage, Cr. McKay said. Cr. Craine said that quite a numbel of married workers could be obtained to-day if accommodation could bo provided for them. Cr. McKay suggested-that a Government representative should he invited to explain the scheme further to the council, and that lie be asked about what were the possibilities of getting materials for building. The advisability might even be. considered of erecting two-roomed cottages, suitable for two men. The chairman said that the scheme was not confined to any specific type of building. It was decided to ask lor a Government representative to explain the scheme further to the council.
