There were present Messrs L. . Stein, P. C. Smith, R. H. Morgan. W. Galloway, C. A. Sutton, R. H. Bunny, A. England, 11. G. Crosse and J. Miller. Mr A. H. Hansen was granted leave of absence. The motion was seconded by Mr Cross and, there being no further nominations, Mr Stein was ■ declared unanimously re-elected. Mr Stein said lie appreciated the honour members had again conferred upon him. He had been chairman for many years and had the interests of the board at heart. With the erection of a new block, members had had strenuous duties during the past year, and he was glad to be able to say that he had nad the support of the board to a man and that was a great help to any chairman. It had pleased him to hear members openly expressing their opinions, as lie realised that in this way the board achieved the best results in the‘interests of the ratepayers. He hoped, they would continue to work together as harmoniously in the future as they had done in the past. Before commencing the ordinary business, the board passed a motion of sympathy with Mr Hansen in the death of his sister. The Prime Minister (Hon. P. Fraser) advised that he regretted being unable to state a definite date on which*it would, be possible for him to officially open the new hospital building, hut lie would advise the board at the earliest possible moment what arrangements he could make. The Department of Health forwarded an invoice for £3 l 10s, representing the board’s contribution to the expenses of the district nurse. A further letter from the department advised that its specimen bylaws were out of print, but pointed out that the by-laws of the Cook, Waiiiawa and Grey Hospital Boards would be suitable for the requirements of the Dannevirke Board. The Dannevirke County Council wrote thankmg the board for the reduction in the levy for the year ending March 31. 1940. The medical superintendent (Dr. WBeedie) reported that during the month 93 patients were admitted to hospital and 88 discharged. On June 1 there were in hospital 76 patients—3o men. 33 women and 13 children. On June 6 a child with scarlet fever was admitted to the isolation block. Fiftyfour surgical operations were performed and there were 46 cases for X-ray examination. The report of the matron (Miss E. A. Orsman) stated that the past month had been a busy one, though the hospital at the moment was much less busy. Gifts were acknowledged from Mesdames Snooks, McQua.de, Parkes, Wilks. Messrs Brighton and McLean, the Red Cross Society, and several anonymous donors. NOTES. At a meeting of the Dannevirke Hospital Board, on Wednesday reference was made by the chairman (Mr Stein) to the death of the famous New Zealand war pilot, Flying-Officer E. J. Kain, D.F.C. In moving that a letter of sympathy be sent to the parents and family of the deceased airman, Mr Stein said he counted Mr and Mrs R. G. Kain, of Wadestown, Wellington, as particular friends whom he had known for many years. He felt sure that in this tribute to his memory, the board was expressing the leelings of the whole Dominion at the loss of one whose name would go down in history as one of New Zealand’s greatest aviators. The motion was carried with all the members, standing in silence. The section of the main WoodvilleDannevirke highway on the Dannevirke side of the new deviation, where the Public Works Department is engaged in rraising the level of the road, is in a bad condition as the result of recent wet weather. Some drivers of low-slung cars on Wednesday' experienced difficulty at this point, hut with a continuance of the fine weather of yesterday the surface should speedily improve. A match between men’s teams representing the Woodville and Hamua Golf clubs will be played at the Woodville links on Sunday, commencing at 1 p.m. The following is the Woodville team: W. J.
