GORGE RAILWAY
EXTENSION OF TUNNEL. COPING WITH DEBRIS. Consequent on the slip in the Manawatu Gorge railway at a tunnel near the Ashhurst end and the resultant recurring trouble in clearing debris from the site, the Railway Department lias entered on a somewhat large undertaking in building an extension, in concrete, to the tunnel mouth, thus removing the actual entrance some distance from the hillside. 'This extension takes the place of a “verandah” of railway lines which was in use formerly and which disappeared under the tremendous weight of the slip. The men carrying through the present job are camped in departmental huts at Ashhurst. ,
