ENUMERATION OF DAILY STOCK
The first enumeration of dairy stock in New Zealand was made in 1895, the total herd then numbering 257,140 cows. 'The number rose to 381,000 in 1901, and has increased cumulatively ever since, until in 1935 the Dominian herd stood at 1,952,000 dairy cows. Funds for relief of wheatgrowers in Australia will be distributed on a sliding scale based on the yield of bushels per acre. The basis of 'payment approved is as follows:—No yield, 3s an acre: one bushel an acre, 2s an acre; two bushels, 2s 3^l; - three bushels, Is 9Jd; four bushels, Is 32d; five bushels, 9fd; six bushels. 3Jd. No payment is to be made to farmers who obtained yields of seven bushels or more an acre.
The Flax Industry. Re-establishment of the flax industry in the North is under way, according to Mr A. IT. Long, advisor to a company which ha-s taken over a plantation of 1200 acres aii ICaingaroa. It will be recalled that during the last war New Zealand hemp largely incroascd in demand and price. It is probable that the same tiling will happen again, says Mr Long, who is a member of. the New Zealand Flax Rehabilitation Committee. Auckland Herd Tests.
Tho August figures of the Auckland Herd Improvement Association, more generally known as tho Herd Testing Association, show that the association average for the 41,757. cows under test was 6061 b milk, 4.51 test and 27.41 b fat, as compared with 46,840 cows, giving 59511> milk, with 4.58 test and 27.21 b fat for August, 1938, and 52.980 cows giving 6741 b milk with a 4.62 test and 31.21 b lat in August, 1937.
