QUESTIONS TO MR PIROW.
TEA WITH GERMAN AIRMEN.
CAPETOWN, March 15,
The South African Minister for Defence (Mr 0. Pjrow) cleverly fenced with questioners in the House of Assembly yesterday about some visiting German airmen to whom permission to enter the country was given provided that cameras and weapons were not introduced.
The airmen paid their respects to Mr Pirow at tea, he said, and discussed climatic conditions, big-game hunting, and “similar matters of international importance.” Ho said that he was unaware that an Imperial Pacific defence conference would be held in Australia or New Zealand. There was no prospect of a similar conference being held by the Union or other South African Governments.
A curt negative from Mr Pirow mot a suggestion that Sir Donald Banks, tho British Permanent Under-Secretary for Air, and Air-Marshal Sir Arthur Longmore, members of the British Air Mission in Australia, should be invited to South Africa to discuss th© manufacture of aircraft.
The Minister promised to make a statement on defence during th© budget debate.
