DEFENCE OF FAR EAST.
WARNING TO BRITAIN.
LONDON, Fob. 10
“The British Fleet to-day is stronger in most respects than any conceivable hostilo European but her naval forces in the Far East are clearly inadequate,” says s'lr Hector Bywater, naval correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. “The situation there will remain precarious until it is possible to send a battle fleet to Singapore,” lie adds. “Three of Great Britain’s 15 battleships are now refitting, and no new battleships will be ready until 1940. “There is a serious lag in the reconstruction of old cniisers, destroyers, and sloops as anti-aircraft and anti-submarine vessels. “Tactical training and keenness are at a higher level now than in 1935.” adds Mr Bvwater. “This is due to the greater fuel allowance and the stimulating effect of the threat of war on the fighting spirit.
