PORK AND BACON.
SHOW CLASSES JUDGED. Exhibits in the special pork and bacon classes at the Manawatu Spring Show were judged on the books today at the bacon works at Longburn by Dr C. P. MeMeekan, of Massey College. There was a large number of pig breeders present, and also a party of boys from-the Palmerston North Boys’ High School under Mr J. J. Stevenson, to hear an interesting talk by Dr MeMeekan. The awards were made as follows:— PORKER CLASS. (Any age, breed or cross, suitable for export trade). L. E. Hansen (Kauwhata) ... 1 A. Mikkelsen (Ivairanga) 2 H. K. Fieidhouse (Rongotea) ... * Cheltenham Dairy Co * * Equal, third. Judged on the hoof at the show W. A. Davison’s entry was first, L. E. Hansen's second and H. E. Fieidliousc's third. BACONER CLASS. (Purebred or crossbred, suitable fot bacon). W. A. Davison (Rongotea) ... 1 L. E. Hansen 2 F. E. C. Conway (Longburn) ... * B. E. Keillor (Palmerston North) * * Equal, third. At the show an entry by Mr Keiller (not the one placed third to-day) was first ; an entry by Mr W. A. Davison (not the one placed first to-day) was second, and Mr Davison’s first prize pig to-day was third then. Dr. MeMeekan- said that on the whole the bacon carcases were not of really high standard, but this was easily understood. The pigs were exhiibt'ed at the Spring Show a.nd invariably pigs at an autumn show were better, as was evidenced at the Feilding Show held recently. The speaker dealt extensively with the system of judging, which, he said, was carried out according to Smitlificld standards. The object was to breed and grow the pig which was most acceptable to the overseas consumer, and it was on this basis that the Smithfield standards operated. Dr. MeMeekan said that it was noticeable that breeders were getting greater control over fat. Several questions were answered, and at the conclusion the speaker was accorded a vote of thanks. Assisting Dr. MeMeekan in the judging was Mr E. P. Nielsen (supervisor to the Wellington District Pig Council).
