NATIONAL SERVICE
BIG BRITISH CAMPAIGN.
ENROLLING VOLUNTEERS
FINDING SUITABLE WORK
(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received January 23, 8.5 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 22.
A great co-ordinated campaign for the enrolment of volunteers for the various branches of the national service, and particularly organisations concerned with air raid precautions, opens next week. Mr Chamberlain will broadcast to the nation on Monday night, and on Tuesday there will be a national service rally at the Albert Hall.
On Wednesday a nation-wide distribution begins of the National Service Guide, which will contain all the necessary information to enable each citizen to decide where his or her services can best be employed subject to a schedule which will he issued in provisional form the day before of “reserved occupations.” The occupations in question are those of such importance in a time of emergency that those engaged in them would best serve the national interests in war by remaining at their posts and intensifying their efforts. Provisional regulations for a census of 1941 have been issued by the Minister of Health (Mr Malter Elliot) considerably in advance of the normal date, and it is recalled that Sir John Anderson (Lord Privy Seal), in the House of Commons last month, said said that the necessary steps would be taken shortly to enable a complete national register to be compiled immediately it was required in time of emergency.
