SPECTACULAR SMASH
INCIDENT AT HASTINGS. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Jan. 22. The most spectacular accident seen in Hastings for many years occurred on Saturday afternoon, when a delivery ear collided with a light car at the intersection of Maranni and Avenue Roads, swerved across the footpath, up a steep flight of five steps, and then smashed through two sets of doors to eoiiie fo rest beside the counter in the main vestibule of the Daily Mail office. Neither the driver of the delivery car, Mr J>. AV. Maleolmson, of the Lands and Survey Department, Wellington, nor Miss Ellon Allison, of Hastings, the occupant of the light car, was injured. A newspaper employee. Miss M. Eearn, received bruises and shock when she was struck by a flying length of limber. Another employee, Miss Y. Hinds, had passed through the doors to the street a few seconds before the crash. 'Hie front of ihe office was completely wrecked and resembled the scene of an explosion. Had there been anyone near the counter, as in an ordinary week-day, they would not have escaped serious injury. INJURIES IN COLLISION. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 22. Because it was feared that moving him might aggravate his injuries, James Bicknall, a New Plymouth taxi driver, was left upside down in his vehicle till the ambulance arrived after a collision at New Plymouth to-day. He is suffering- from two broken ribs, abrasions and shock. The taxi after the collision turned over twice, finishing on the hood.
