RAILWAY TRADING.

INCREASED RE YEN UE. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Jan. 22. Interesting figures respecting ihe operations of the Railway Department’s principal subsidiary services were disclosed to-day in a statement by the Minister of Railways (Hon. D. G. Sullivan). “For tlie four weeks ended January i the Minister said, “the refreshment branch revenue totalled £20.811, compared with £19,364 for the same period last year, an increase of £1447. or 7.47 per cent. Separate accounts which made up the total were as follow, last year’s figures being shown in parentheses: Diningrooms £4261 (£3870), counter rooms £16.259 (£15,236). hairdressing saloon and weighing machines £291 (£258). “The gross revenue from the bookstalls section for tlie four weeks amounted to £9539, which was £76-5 more than the receipts for the corresponding period of 1937-38, an increase of 8.71 per cent.” Speaking of the road services, Mr Sullivan said that, though a useful comparison with last year’s holiday period was not possible, as more passenger road routes were being operated now than there were this time last year, the figures relating to special charters (sports, picnics, etc.), and overland tours were encouraging. For the seven weeks from November 20, 1938. to January 7. 1939, 504 vehicle trips were run over a distance of 56.138 vehicle miles, conveying 396 parties and comprising a total of 12,866 passengers.
