KOSY THEATRE. “CASSIDY OF BAR 20.” Hopalong Cassidy’s past, in the person of Nora Lane, returns to hurl into breathless adventuro in Clarence E. Mulford’s latest outdoor action story, Paramount’s “Cassidy of Bar 20.” When New Mexico’s king of cattle-rustlers, Robert Fiske, goes so far as to try and make off with the property of Miss Bane, “Hoppy’s” old sweetheart, the Bar 20 boys go into action and crush him together with his lawless band of Texas border ruffians. In his role of the hard-riding rancher, William -Boyd is assisted by Russell Hayden, Frank Darien, John Elliot and Margaret Marquis, in this picture now showing at the Kosy Theatre. “TIP-OFF GIRLS.” A romance between the secretary of America’s leading racketeer and a G-man whoso job is to crush the dangerous gang forms the exciting love plot of “Tip-Off Girls,” now showing at the Kosy Theatre. Mary Carlisle, the pearl blonde star who is known as Bing Crosby’s favourito leading lady, plays the girl who unwittingly becomes the tool, of the hi-jacking gang, while Lloyd Nolan, the “bad man” of “Wells Fargo,’’ is the G-man who releases her from her trap. This picture is Hollywood’s answer to the racket which has mushroomed throughout the country during the past few years and threatens to take bootlogging’s place as “Public Nuisance No. 1.” Louis King, brought the dramatic “Bulldog Drummond” pictures to the screen, directed. STATE THEATRE. “BRINGING~UP BABY.” A new challenge to the amusementseeking public’s risibilities is now on the motion picture screen in “Bringing Up Baby,” a fast-paced modern comedy romanco now screening at the State Theatre with Katharine Hepburn, no less, playing mad pranks as an heiress animated with mischief, and Cary Grant in an equally bizarre but contrasting role as the victim of her torments. Miss Hepburn portrays an impetuous society girl who always gets what she wants, and wanting Cary Grant, a staid and dignified professor of zoology, she goes after him and does her best to break up his impending marriage to his secretary. Grant, however, has only one interest, in lifo — the completion of the skeleton of a giant dinosaur at his museum. Miss Hepburn, with the aid of a tame leopard, entices him from his work, and involves him in a flood of complications in which their exploits, the leopard’s escape and pursuit over the Connecticut countryside, a mil-lion-dollar bequest, a big game hunter, Miss Hepburn’s domineering aunt, a boastful Irishman and a suspicious psychiatrist are all tangled together in one riotous piece of screen fare. Grant’s matrimonial plans and his peace of mind are lost in the shuffle, while Miss Hepburn, with the best of intentions, manages to get into trouble with her dynamic prosecution of her romantio campaign. The results are as disastrous as they are entertaining. Miss-. Hepburn, who heretofore hag scored chiefly in strong dramatic roles, is said to be sensational as a madcap comedienne in the new offering. “DONALD’S NEPHEWS.” The public have three new heroes. They are Huey, Dewey and Louie, the three bad little ducklings who coino to visit their Uncle Donald in Wait Disney’s “Donald's Nephews,” RKO Radio release in tcchnicolour. MAYFAIR THEATRE. “LIVE, IX)VE AND LEARN.” Robert Montgomery and Rosalind Russell in their first screen appearance together since their joint triumph in “Night Must Fall,” are the stars of “Live, Love and Learn,” now showing at the Mayfair Theatre, with Robert Benchley and Helen Vinson topping an outstanding supporting cast. As a penniless young Greenwich Village artist who marries a rich society girl, wins startling success overnight, is lionised by the “400,” and loses his head, his talents—and almost his wife—Montgomery is offered the greatest opportunity of his career to display all his genius for comedy and melodrama. Miss Russell, a 6 the rich society girl who renounces wealth and position to share the harum scarum life of a Greenwich Village Bohemian artist and who watches wealth ruin the fine talents of the man she married, has been provided with a vehicle which permits her full scope to show the world why Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer made her a star. Fidelity of setting called forth all the talents of technical experts. A Greenwich Village studio in New York plays an important part in early sequences of the story. In strong contract with the shabby garret sequences are the magnificent / settings used for tile period when Montgomery’s sudden affluence prompts him to live beyond his means. One of the largest supporting casts to feature a Hollywood production in many months is headed by Benchley and Miss Vinson. Benchley, famous for his comedy shorts and humorous writings, plays the role of “Oscar,” Montgomery’s bibulous boon companion. Miss Vinson, whose blonde glamour has won her outstanding roles in many pictures, is cast as “Lily,” friend of Miss Russell’s, who tries to take Montgomery away from his wife. Others in important roles include Mickey Rooney, one of Hollywood’s favourite juvenile actors, Monty Woolley from the Broadway musical comedy hit, ‘'On Your Toes,” E. E. Clive, Charles Judels, Maude Eburne, Harlan Briggs, June Clayworth and A 1 Shean. The direction of “Live, Love and Learn” was entrusted to the veteran director, George Fitzmaurife on the basis of his outstanding work in many of Hollywood’s four star successes.
