CRICKET SEASON

THE UNITED CLUB. i ACTIVITIES REVIEWED. ‘ “By entering four teams in the competitions conducted by the Manawatu Cricket Association, senior A, senior B, junior A and junior B, we became the largest club in this district,” states the annual report of the United Cricket Club, covering the eighth season of the club’s activities. “Wo feel justly proud of this fact, and proud that, although no team of ours was successful in winning championship honours, we were, at least, exceedingly successful I in our efforts to provide our players _ with a season of happy and enjoyable cricket. “In respect of finance we can again look back upon a very successful year. We commenced with cash <sn hand amounting to £3 5s lOd, and concluded with £3 Us 6d. The policy of expending practically all of our revenue is justified by the amount of good material we have on hand with which to commence the new season. Our receipts totalled £64 6s 3d, which must surely be a record for any cricket club in this district. From our enthusiastic and loyal supporters we received donations amounting to £4 13s 3d, as against £2 12s 6d in 1936-37, and to those gentlemen who so generously helped us in this respect we offer our thanks. We expended £34 15s 3d on the purchase of playing materials, and we have a very serviceable supply of gear on hand with which to commence the new season. We have written down our assets by the substantial amount of £33 2s Id (70 per cent.) but, in spite of that, have emerged from the year with a surplus of income over expenditure of £2 17s 7d, and our materials now' have a book value of £l4 3s lOd, but in reality arc more valuable than that. We have no liabilities, and the total of our assets now stands at £2l 6s 4d. From subscriptions £42 9s 6d w'as forthcoming, as against £2B 17s 6d for 1936-37 and £25 3s tojr 1935-36. “It was our policy last season to keep in touch with the teams and players by means of cupular letters issued on various playing Saturdays. All items of interest to our members W'cre included in these circulars as well as instructions on certain points. This system W'as most successful, and formed an excellent link binding all our four team together and bringing the policies of the committee more directly to them.” The following statistics of the performances of loading players in the various teams arc given as follow: — SENIOR A.
