NAZI PERSECUTION
BISHOP’S PLIGHT. ' BERLIN, Aug. 25. The Catholic Bishop of Rottenburg, who was ordered to leave the diocese, has refused, declaring that he could not renounce his duties. It is not known whether he will be forcibly expelled. The Nazis allege that he insolently violated his political obligations. The Times Berlin correspondent on July 27 stated that 5000 Nazi demonstrators, who were brought to Rottenburg in motor coaches, broke down the doors of the palace of the Catholic bishop, who had been in high disfavour since he explained that he had not voted for a party thus sending enemies of the Church to the Reichstag. The demonstrators threw documents from the windows and attempted to set fire to the palace. Eventually they entered the chapel, but finding the bisiion on his knees in prayer with Archbishop Freiburg they withdrew.
