OROUA DOWNS

SCHOOL COMMISSfONERS. A meeting of the commissioners of the Oroua Downs School was held, this week, when all the commissioners were present. It was decided to immediately proceed with the preparing of the ground for the basketball court and to write to the Education Board for permission to remove the trees at the back of the school so that the sunlight may penetrate in the afternoon. Pampas grass will be planted in place of the trees. Several necessary repair jobs are to Be put under way so that these may be completed before school reopens. Accounts amounting to £6 19s 3d for the fancy dfess ball and for 15s 9d for sundry purposes were passed for payment. The commissioners expressed their high appreciation of the excellent manner in which both Mr Francis and Miss Sadd had controlled the children and expressed pleasure at the splendid performance carried through at the ball. The roll is 76 and the attendance is 62.7 per cent, due to much sickness in the district. The present arrangements relative to the dental clinic were discussed and some efforts are to be made to have these improved. The proceeds from the ball were given at approximately £3 10s. The floors of the school are to be thoroughly cleaned and oiled during the holidays. Some discussion took place regarding the erection of swimming baths, and this question is to be further investigated when something definite will be brought forward.
