EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.’AUGUST 24, 1908. , The annual meeting of tho Manawatu Racing Club had been held, Mr R. S. Abraham presiding. The balance to the credit <of the profit and loss account had been £l5B 19s 6d. Totalisator commissions had decreased by £537, but bookmakers’ fees had shown a substantial increase. Mr Abraham had been re-elected president and Messrs A. Strang and D. Buick vicepresidents. The Wellington provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union had decided to strenuously oppose a proposal that the minimum wages for day labourers on farms be 7s a day, and that regular farm hands receive one half-holi-day a week. Such a proposal, it was stated, would seriously affect the farming industry. The British Socialist Party had decided to call the attention 'of Parliament to King Edward’s personal activity in foreign affairs. The total enrolled strength of the defence forces in New Zealand had been 19,947. During the previous year £176,426 had been spent on defence, and it had been proposed to spend £214,470 in 1908-09. At the annual meeting of the Nfw Zealand Farmers’ Dairy Union it had been decided to pay a dividend of 5 per cent, on paid up capital. An amendment that the dividend be 10 per cent, had been lost.
