DEBATING SOCIETY.

IMPROMPTU SPEECHES. Impromptu speeches for the Hornblow Trophy were held when the first of the competitions open to members of the Palmerston North Literary and Debating Society took place. The following were the competitors: Miss M. Pearson, Mr It. Allison, Mrs E. L. Christian, Mrs J. Walker, Mr H. G. Mills, Mr A. C. Phillpot, Mr T. McArlidge, Mr C. Sutherland, Miss R. Bird, Mrs L. Bennett, Mrs G. Pratt, Mr P. H. Parr, Mr H. S. King and Mr T. C. Watson. Mr Watson presided and welcomed members of the Business Girls’ Club as visitors. The second half of the programme took the form of impromptu debates. Those taking part were : Mrs L. Bennett, Mr A. C. Phillpot, Mrs J. Walker, Mr T. McArlidge, Miss R. Bird, Mr King, Miss M. Pearson, Mr G. Pratt.

The adjudicator was Mr L. G. H. Sinclair, who awarded the Hornblow Trophy to Mr Watson. Mr Sinclair remarked upon the high standard of public speaking achieved by members. He was given an appreciative ovation for his helpful remarks. An invitation from St. Andrew’s Men’s Club to engage in a debate was accepted.
